Town of Eastover Holds First Election

The people of Eastover have chosen their first Mayor and Town Council. On Tuesday, January 8, 2008, approximately one-third of the town’s registered voters turned out to elect Charles McLaurin, running unopposed, as Mayor and to select six of nine candidates for the new Town Council. Council Members elected were Lawrence Buffaloe, Cheryl Hudson, Donald Hudson, Benny Pearce, Sara Piland, and Willie Geddie.

The Town’s first election was one of celebration as voters flocked to the polls, greeting neighbors and friends with smiles and hugs. Andy Smith rode his horse to the polls. Parents brought their children so they also could witness history in the making. The day culminated after the polls closed as more than 200 people gathered at the Eastover Community Center to see the election results posted by the Cumberland County Board of Elections staff.

The election was a historic event and will be well documented in the town’s history. The temporary Town Hall Offices will be housed at 3863 Dunn Road. Some of the first tasks awaiting the new Council include setting up the Town Hall office and hiring a town clerk.
