Greetings!

If anyone doubts that we live in a beautiful community, I have two wonderful places that I would recommend you visit: Methodist University and the town of Eastover. I toured the MU campus with University President Dr. Elton Hendricks and enjoyed walking in the same areas that my mother did when she was an undergraduate there in the 1970s. There have been many improvements during Dr. Hendricks' 25 plus years as president, and I encourage everyone to visit Methodist U (Go Monarchs!).

I also had the privilege of traveling to Eastover to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the Eastover Sanitary's District new water project that will ensure that all residents of Eastover have water. I also attended a recent town meeting and got a sneak preview of the new town flag. It is a great town, and I enjoyed the beautiful homes, great people, and the enthusiasm of the town's citizens. These are but two of the many jewels in Cumberland County. Take time during this hot weather and cool down in many of the wonderful areas in and around the county.
Issues in the County
Child Support Enforcement
Last year, the N.C. General Assembly made the decision that the state of North Carolina would no longer fund child support enforcement (CSE) and the counties of our state were forced to determine whether to include child support in their Department of Social Services budget or privatize the agency through a contractor. At the April 6 meeting of the Board of Commissioners, we voted to approve a plan that would establish CSE as a separate county department, effective July 1. The board chose among three options: a private contract ($3,709,978), including it in the Department of Social Services ($4,365,646), or as a separate county deparment ($3,275,913). All current CSE employees will be able to keep their jobs, however their longevity will not be recognized. I voted in support of the county department option, not only because it saved money, but also because it allowed the county to maintain oversight of this vital agency and to reap the benefits of CSE collections.
