FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Town of Eastover – Public Safety Notice Regarding Recent Residential Placement
The Eastover Town Council is aware of community concerns regarding the recent establishment of a residence occupied by a registered sex offender within town limits. The Council understands the seriousness of this issue and the importance of maintaining transparency, safety, and trust with our residents.
Under North Carolina law, municipalities are not notified in advance when a registered sex offender relocates. Registration and monitoring are handled by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry, which operate independently of town government. As a result, the Council learned of this situation only after the residence was established and the residents had begun moving in.
Even without prior notice, the Town Council is committed to taking every lawful and appropriate step to protect our community. We are actively:
- Consulting with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office to confirm compliance with all state restrictions and monitoring requirements.
- Reviewing local zoning and land-use ordinances to determine whether any violations exist.
- Establishing a stronger communication protocol with county authorities to improve future information flow.
The safety of Eastover families remains our highest priority. We encourage residents to stay informed through the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry, which provides real-time updates and optional alert notifications.
